Artist Statement
For this project, I wanted to incorporate elements for the Byzantine and the Classical time period, but not make that totally obvious. I made columns on each corner of the square board. Each of the ones diagonal from each other are leveled the same way. It creates an interesting contrast and once it is hung, a nice slant is shown for the whole piece. The arch-like pieces in the middle of the square board  create a sort of maze when you look at it at eye level. Varying the sizes and heights of them added to the column elements and was a good solution for the space in the middle. Every thing is painted white with gesso and ink, but the bottom side of the board is painted black with ink.  To make the arch-like structures sticking out through the board not so noticeable, I painted those little parts black as well. If you look at the bottom, it has its own appeal, but very understated.
