Jaclyn Kremposky - On Longing Assignment

On Longing by Susan Stewart

"The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale."

This picture represents how small that the human body can be compared to things like statues and monuments out in the world. We do not realize this until we are placed next to it.

"Capacity of objects to serve as traces of authentic experience."

This picture of the starfish was the first time that I have ever seen one in real life. It really captures the new creatures that I was able to experience while at the beach.

"The souvenir releases the public, the monumental, and the three-dimensional into the miniature, that which can be enveloped by the body."

This board is a souvenir of my parent's wedding. It has a picture of them and signatures of everyone that attended the wedding. It is a representation of their special day all in this one board.

"To have a souvenir of the exotic is to possess both a specimen body and a trophy."

This picture is a souvenir of my time at Walker Stalker. This lady was dressed up as a zombie and would not break character. There was a contest going on, and apparently she was very committed to it. My point is that dressing up like this is unusual, and she is transforming herself to win a prize.

"...the nostalgic input of the handmade in a "plastic world"."

Building and decorating gingerbread men houses is my favorite past time of the Christmas time. I do not think that much of this kind of hands on creativity is happening with technology and such taking us away from the old ways of things.
