Jaclyn Kremposky- Touch Assignment

Easing Pain

"In a number of specialized pain-control centers around the country, it's understood that pain is as much an emotional and psychological affliction as a physical one. "

- Diane Ackerman (A Natural History of the Senses)

Artist Statement:
There are many ways that we can ease the pain that we go through. In my drawing, I included a woman and needles about to be injected into her body. Each of the needles represent a form of how pain can be reduced. In the book, things like anesthetics, distractions, acupuncture, and hypnosis were some of the forms mentioned that can confuse or interfere the signals we get for pain. My drawing is supposed to symbolize the many ways that we have to rid ourselves of the pain we undergo.

The Skin Has Eyes

"What is a sense of one's self? To a large extent, it has to do with touch, with how we feel. Our proprioceptors (from Latin for "one's own" receptors) keep us informed about where we are in space, if our stomachs are busy, whether or not we are defecating, where our legs, arms, head are, how we're moving, what we feel like from moment to moment. "

- Diane Ackerman (A Natural History of the Senses)

Artist Statement:
By touching with our skin and looking with our eyes, we know the world we live in is three dimensional. In my drawing, I made the section of this chapter quite literal. The combination gives us memories and information about what we experience while we are living. When you reach out and feel and see the world, it adds depth and clarity to the what is around us.
